Kim, as I was telling Katy, you have it all wrong. The idiotic media has over-used and generically used "Assault rifle" to act as trigger words (excuse the pun) to make you think most guns seen on TV in crimes are illegal.
Let me give you an example. Say your sitting on the curb, and I stab you in the neck with a fork. I'm sure you agree, that what I just did would be assault. Would we now have to label all forks as "Assault Forks"? I mean, its just a piece of metal, and unless used in a malicious way, can be used in a responsible matter. That is the case with most "Assault Rifles" you see the uneducated media reporting on. I suggest you make sure you are not narrow minded, and in fact I encourage you to go to a gun range with someone you know who is trained well with weapons. You never know, you may enjoy it. I know myself and my wife enjoy shooting tremendously. Most women who shoot, do so very well. It may just save your life one day.
Kim;
The second amendment says "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon." Shall is an absolute in legal terms. Therefore all "gun laws" are unconstitutional. If you don't want a weapon, fine, don't buy one. But don't you DARE tell me, someone who has owned many guns all of my life, that I can't have a freedom guarnteed to me over 230 years ago by men wiser than both of us. I have never hurt anyone with a gun. I would only use it in self defense. Yes I have "assault weapons," and I know how to responsibly use them. It is OUR right.

You need to understand that Constitutional law is dependent on minimal impedance of freedom. To permit incremental reductions in freedoms of any kind invites loss of those freedoms.
Weapons bans have no impact at all on criminals. They procure their weapons illegally already. Enforcement of the highest order is the only way to impact these people. It is also the only deterrent to those that would join them.
A gun never committed a crime. A criminal will use whatever tool he has available. If not a gun, a knife. You see exactly this in Africa where a machete is the tool of choice. They have automatic weapons, but ammunition is scarce, so they use a knife. It isn't law that makes that scarce. It is money.
Study your enemy to understand what will really impact him. Study criminals. You will find they have little concern for the laws passed in Washington.
